Welcome to Saturn Science. This site will be dedicated to learning and teaching science and technology. I am a professional high school science and mathematics teacher and I teach in Chengdu, China. Last year I taught in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
I am interested in finding new ways to reach my students by using project based learning and hands-on activities to make connections to mathematics and science. Some of the tools I use include R, the statistical programming language, Python, Tracker, and the Lego Mindstorms programming language. I use these tools to create projects for some of the units I teach. I try to create as many projects as possible because students learn best and achieve at higher levels when exposed to relevant project based learning.
I get much of my inspiration from Gary Stager. He advocates that students should be tinkering and building things, especially with computing, electronics, and robotics. I also admire Seymour Papert, the inventor of the Logo programming language. He wrote the book “Mindstorms” that calls for students to use computers and programming to learn content. Arvind Gupta also gives me lots of ideas for projects and activities. I love how he makes things from throw away items.
Saturn Science will become an after school enrichment center, a summer camp and also a Saturday science mini camp in Davao, Philippines. We will use and build upon these educational ideas to motivate and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. We hope to start out first science and technology camp during the summer of 2015.
